Clementine Hunter

Zinnias on a Grey Background , 1955

Oil on Artist Board
10 x 14 in

This early 1950s painting of zinnias by renowned Louisiana folk artist Clementine Hunter celebrates her favorite flower from the gardens of Melrose Plantation, where she lived and worked for much of her life. The bold, simplified blossoms, flat perspective, and vibrant color embody her distinctive self?taught style and are enhanced by the period?correct “CH” signature from her sought?after early phase (mid 1950's).

Zinnia paintings are central to Hunter’s body of work, appearing from her first documented floral canvases and continuing throughout a career that produced thousands of images of Southern rural and plantation life. Hunter used enduring motifs like zinnias to honor everyday beauty and the history of the Melrose community, making pieces such as this especially meaningful to collectors of Southern folk and African American art. ?
