Clementine Hunter was a memory painter from the Northwestern region of Louisiana known as Cane River. It is located near the city of Natchitoches, LA - The oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory. This largely agrarian area of fertile soil produced many varieties of crops. In the earliest days of its existence, it took people to work that land and plant the seeds to grow those crops. In this original oil painting by Clementine Hunter, she is sharing her memories of a few of the people. Here they are using typical farm implements to work the soil. It is not known to the viewer if they are breaking up the soil or digging up weeds but it's for certain their work is essential for a successful crop.
