Clementine Hunter

Pecan Picking (Black Frame), 1984

Oil on Canvas
15 x 30 in

While most people associate Melrose Plantation, where Clementine Hunter lived for most of her life, with endless rows of cotton, the plantation also had a thriving pecan grove. In this work by Hunter, laborers gather pecans from the trees and collect them in baskets and simple, wooden barrels. In a scene on the right-hand side, one worker shakes the tree while another gathers the falling pecans.
