Clementine Hunter often included the subject of death in her paintings. In this depiction of a funeral procession, Hunter captured St. Augustine Catholic Church (Isle Brevelle), located in Natchez, Louisiana. The church, which was founded in 1829 by freed slave Nicolas Augustin Metoyer, had a particular significance because it was the oldest church in the United States built by and for free people of color.
